Last September, well known Vincy producer/manager Alex “Kubiyashi” Barnwell reached out to me about writing a couple songs for his client – St. Vincent’s reigning Soca Monarch, Skinny Fabulous.

“Skinny?“, I thought to myself. “But he’s like a lyricist…?!”

Alex said Skinny wanted to push the envelope and try new things… and I was more than game to write for such a well known name in the Soca arena.

Less than 24 hours after Kubiyashi emailed me the RedRum Riddim (produced by Derek Brin & Gary Serrao) to “vibes ah idea for Skinny”, I sent them back the finished demo of what would become known as “Non Stop” and Alex soon reported back to me that Skinny loved it.

Many months later – just in time for Vincy Mas 2013 – the song has finally been released, with a wicked mix by Precision Productions and Derek Brin.

Not much more to say except enjoy this Groovy Soca monster of a tune and thanks to Skinny and the whole team (Kubiyashi, Derek, Gary and the entire Precision squad) for the opportunity!

For those of you keeping track, I’ve already had the pleasure of working with Antigua’s golden-voiced crooner Tian Winter before on two different projects.

The first time we crossed paths was when I wrote the Groovy Soca smash “On D Road” (produced by Precision Productions) for Tian and St. Lucia’s 2012 Groovy Monarch, Teddyson John.

After that Tian and his Team hit me up to co-write the “Flames Remix” to his Power Soca hit “Raving” (produced by Precision Productions and Studio 758), which featured Antiguan legend Onyan from the iconic Soca band Burning Flames.

Now in 2013, I’m honoured to be a part of the virtual all-star Team behind Tian’s new single “Dancing With The Stars” on the StarDance Riddim.

FYI, every member of the creative team behind this amazing new single has been respsonsible for hits you know and love!

Ashwin “Smash” Seegobin has contributed to countless hits behind the scenes as part of Precision Productions, but you probably know him best as the producer of the popular Cosmic Riddim back in 2012, from whence came Bunji Garlin’s game-changing single “Cosmic Shift”.

Peter “WildFire” Noel is well known as a solo artist, but is also one of the hottest upcoming Caribbean/Trini/Soca songwriters in the game, having written now-classic Soca hits like Tian Winter’s “Cya Fail Me” and Machel Montano’s “So High (A.O.A)” on the ElectroLights Riddim.

In addition to saying thanks to Tian and his management for continuing to believe in my talent, I also have to thank the riddim’s producer, Ashwin “Smash” Seegobin, as well as WildFire for including me on this one. This song turned out to be one of my favourite lyrical contributions in the last few years.

“Like a diamond shinin’ bright in the spotlight/You’re the only thing I see in front of me tonight, yeah/Pretty girl/When you dance it’s like a miracle/Cause the club just turned invisible/It’s just you and me”… With lyrics like that, do I even need to say more?

Look forward to more collaborations between myself and Tian Winter in the future, definitely more Precision/Smash/Vybe collabs, and hopefully more instances of me writing with WildFire as well in the near future.

Thanks to the support of the many fans and supporters who emailed in their votes, Mista Vybe was able to beat out a a tough batch of nominees including major songwriting names like Kerwin DuBois, Nadia Batson, Ghostwriters Music, Dale Ryan and Erphaan Alves.

In the wake of winning the prestigious award, Mista Vybe stated: “Above all I have to thank every single person who took the time to vote for me. I’m really overwhelmed by the support on this… I was already surprised and honoured to be nominated. Finding out that I won was even more of a pleasant surprise. It’s good to know that people see the hard work and genuinely appreciate what I’m doing.”

Upon hearing the good news, Mista Vybe stated: “It’s an honour to be considered one of the top seven songwriters of the year in the Soca arena. Honestly, I’m surprised to say the least because I didn’t write any of the songs I worked on this year with any thoughts of competitions or awards. I just tried to write the best songs possible. Being succesful competition-wise and being nominated for awards is a bonus. All I can do is be thankful, stay humble and keep writing the best songs possible in the future. This is only the beginning.”

In addition to being nominated himself in the Best Writer category, Mista Vybe’s work also contributed to several other notable Nominations for people he worked with as a writer for the 2013 Trinidad Carnival season.

His musical collaborators Precision Productions (with whom Vybe worked on Soca Monarch semi-finalist K. Rich’s “Wine Back” and Inches’ “Wuk Up” among other hits) are nominated for Best Production House.

Breakthrough artist K. Rich was nominated for two awards (Fashion With A Passion Award – Male and Multimedia Soca Star) thanks to a great performance of the Mista-Vybe-penned “Wine Back” at this years Groovy semis.

And finally, Shurwayne Winchester was nominated in the Soca 21 Energy Award category for his electrifying Power semi-finals performance of “We Control D Road” – yet another song written by Mista Vybe.

With all of those accolades, plus the official announcement that Shurwayne Winchester has made it to the Soca Monarch finals in the Power category with the Vybe-penned “We Control D Road”, to say that Mista Vybe is having a good Trinidad Carnival 2013 season seems like an understatement at this point.

Having previously won the Power Monarch crown as well as the Groovy Monarch and Road March titles, Shurwayne is no doubt a strong contender, especially with a powerful song like “We Control D Road”. After his energetic semis performance, which brought Mista Vybe’s exuberant lyrics to life, it’s clear that Shurwayne is now one to watch on Finals night.

Upon learning that the song he penned helped Shurwayne reach the Soca Monarch finals, a humble (as always) Mista Vybe stated: “All I can really say is I’m proud and thankful that things worked out so well. Thanks to Shurwayne for reaching out to me to work on that project  and big up the producers – Alton Bertie and Jessie John – as well.”

Just FYI – this isn’t the first time Mista Vybe’s gifted pen has landed a competitor in the International Soca Monarch or International Groovy Monarch Finals. He has previously written songs for  finalists like “Soca Michael Jackson” Andy Stephenson, Michelle Sylvester, Miss Alysha (ft. Fayann Lyons) and Nadia Batson, not to mention his own multiple appearances as a solo artist in both Groovy and Power categories in years gone by – most notably with “Ting 4 D Road” in 2006.

Trivia Tidbit: Did you know that Mista Vybe went into the 2006 Power Monarch as the man to beat, having WON the semis outright with an electrifying performnce of his smash “Ting 4 D Road”?!

Once again, Mista Vybe’s musical gifts have proven their worth, as his songwriting has taken yet another competitor to the finals – this time, the artist being Shurwayne.

In response to the news of two of his creations making it into Soca Monarch, Mista Vybe humbly mused: “I’m very honoured to have K. Rich and Shurwayne get selected for semis singing songs I wrote. I was already thankful for the great reception the songs got from radio, DJs and fans, so now having both songs reach semis is like the icing on the cake.”

The semi-final round of the Digicel International Groovy Soca Monarch and Play Whe International Power Soca Monarch competitions will take place on Sunday Janauary 20th, 2013. Don’t hesitate to vote for K. Rich in the Groovy category by texting “RICH” (7424) to 4768, and vote for Shurwayne in Power by texting “SWSW” (7979) to 7622!

I have to say that this uptempo masqueraders’ anthem harkens back to Shurwayne’s “Iron Man” days, and definitely captures some of the same gritty energy displayed in his trademark tunes: “D band Coming”, “Dead Or Alive” and “Cyah Wait”.

Shout out to the producers, Alton “ABX” Bertie and Jessie John as well. I was never in the same room with them for this project, but through the power of technology we were all able to collab on a monster track!
